If you want to know how to get rid of frizzy hair in humid weather, you know that that can be a huge challenge.  Frizzy hair is a magnet for humidity and those tiny water molecules just get in our hair like annoying uninvited guests at the family table.  But why does this happen and how can we get rid of frizzy hair in humid weather.  For those of us blessed (or cursed) to live in climates where it is warm most of the time, we know that humidity is the other side of the coin. However, there is no need to despair.  Here are some things you can do to tame your frizzy hair, have your hair staying gorgeous all day long, and get rid of frizzy hair in humid weather.

Why does my hair get frizzy in humidity

-o your hair gets frizzy in humidity because of the chemical makeup of your hair.  If you remember from your science classes—try to think back to those good ole days–hair is made up of keratin proteins.  Now those keratin proteins are bonded together by hydrogen atoms and sulfur atoms.  Now, the sulfur and hydrogen atoms each play a role in your hair.  The sulfur atoms give your hair strength and the hydrogen atoms give your hair its shape.

But what does that have to do with my hair frizzing up in humidity?  Let’s go back to science class.  Water is made up of H2O. Remember? Okay, so that’s two hydrogen atoms bonded with one oxygen atom.  Now back to the hair.  When there is a high amount of humidity in the air, it simply means that there is more water in the air.  If your hair is porous, or damaged from over processing or lack of moisturizing, the hydrogen bonds in your hair will attract the hydrogen bonds in the air.  And a marriage made in hell produces a baby called FRIZZ!  Those pesky little hydrogen bonds will wreak havoc with your hair.  Your hair does not stand a chance since the hydrogen bonds get deep inside the shaft and blow up by absorbing water.  This swelling raises the cuticle of your hair and again you have frizz.

Fighting frizz begins in the shower:  water temperature and the right products.  Make sure that you are using a shampoo that is sulfate-free and will not strip your hair of essential oils.  Typically frizzy hair tends to be dry in the first place and that will cause it to attract more moisture.  When you rinse your hair after washing, make sure the water is as cold as it can be.  Cold water seals the cuticle and will make it less likely to attract the pesky hydrogen molecules we talked about.

When you dry your hair, use a t-shirt (can’t say this enough), or t-shirt towel.  The little hooks in the cotton towels rough up and snag your hair’s cuticle thus priming it open to absorb hydrogen from the humid air and inviting those atoms to bond with the hair’s own hydrogen bonds, causing more swelling and frizz.

Use a product specifically made as a leave-in frizz protector.  Typically these products will be applied while the hair is still damp.  Make sure the product does not weigh down your hair because too much of a good thing can go awry very quickly.  Over-use of styling products can make your hair feel oily and lead to over washing which will strip your hair and here go again:  dry hair causes frizz. Yup!

Hair spray.  Yes, that good ole bottle of Aqua Net.  It made your mother’s hair look like a hair helmet, but hair spray, used in the right amounts, lightly spritzed can help keep those unruly fly-aways in place.

And if all else fails, you know what they say.  Sometimes you just can’t beat Mother Nature.  If you know you’ll attend an even where you may have to be outside or the weather forecast predicts high humidity, then simply wear an up-do or style your hair to avoid minimal frizz damage or worry.

The last thing I would say is that if your frizzy hair is really troubling you and you live in a very humid place, then you may want to go to the salon and get a professional Keratin treatment.  This type of treatment should be done with careful consideration because after all, you are putting strong chemicals in your hair that alter the hair structure.

How to get rid of frizzy hair can be tricky to say the least, but maintaining healthy hair that’s nourished from the inside out will help it cooperate and stay luxuriously beautiful under any weather conditions.
